Some characteristics apply across all boundaries. They apply if we are an employee, self employed, a business owner, a friend, a partner, parent, child, in every part of our life. In listening to a call with Mark Joyner in the Simpleology Coaching program, he mentioned a book that is the second most highly distributed book in the world, second only to the Bible. It is not a very long book, more of a pamphlet. The name of the book is “A Message to Garcia”. You can find a free copy of it here at the Project Guttenburg.
It won’t take you very long to read. It won’t take very long to understand. It may take a lifetime to implement. The book should be have been entitled “Rowan, a Rare Man”. Do you have the characteristics that Rowan showed? I know in my own life I have struggled at times having that dependability. Notice that when they needed something done, Rowan was brought up as the one to get it done if anyone can. Shouldn’t that be our target in life?
To be known as a man who gets things done in the clutch. Two of my favorite basketball players are Michael Jordan and Larry Bird.
Both played with very different styles. They came from different eras and had different strengths. They have in common the desire, the willingness, to take the last shot. Rowan was willing to take responsibility for the message getting to Garcia. He didn’t come up with a list of reasons why he couldn’t. Bird and Jordan took responsibility for winning. They took the actions that were needed when they were needed. Did they win every game? Hit every shot? No!! They failed often. But that did not stop them from taking the next shot.
In life, we make many mistakes. We struggle, and stumble along. Our goal should be to develop the kind of attitude that Rowan had and the reputation he had. Think about how your business would change if your customers saw you as THE guy to do business with. If your reputation was such that people recommended you to their friends as the Get it done guy.
It isn’t something that comes quickly. It takes time to develop that reputation. Today is the day to start. To take the challenge to be Rowan. To be the one that your customers depend on, respect, trust and need. Start today!!! Get moving toward your goal!
