I have been thinking about writing about Billy Mays since his passing. His passion for what he sold and how he went about it were always amazing to me. Since the show Pitchmen came it, my respect for him has only deepened. Watching the behind the scenes of a real life marketing business was fascinating. Before I got a chance to truly get my thoughts organized about Billy and what he meant to the world, I ran across another blog post that says it far better than I ever could think about.
It is written by Rich Schefren who is often called the Guru to the Gurus. It is long but never boring. It includes videos to entertain and I suggest watching them. Some for the comedy and some for the pitch. Billy had two quotes that I loved more than anything.
1) Life’s a pitch and then you buy
2) I don’t yell. I project.
He projected his passion in every product he sold. He added real value to the world in a way that only a marketer can. He helped make many people rich and helped many people have easier lives. My son said that late night TV will no longer be worth watching without Billy on it. He is 17 and identified with Billy and his passion. While the world and news ground to halt at the passing of a singer, Billy’s passing was a far sadder event to me. I will miss his projected late at night when I couldn’t sleep and seeing his passion for the products.
Take some time and read the full post. Rich has done an excellent job in capturing Billy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
