In What about Wealth one of the sides of true wealth was our relationships with family and friends. Yesterday I got to experience the strength of family relationships. My son’s car died on him. Not sure what is wrong but it won’t run or even start. It’s an 86 Camaro so has a few miles under its belt. It died the first time in the road on the way to town. Logan called from the side of the road with traffic whizzing by. I am sure he was not happy about the circumstances.
Logan's Camaro
My dad got there before I did and was able with the help of Logan and a friendly passerby get the car pushed out of the road and into a gas station. After waiting a few minutes the car started again and managed to stay running until pulling into the driveway at my parent’s house. It died halfway up the hill and sat there over the weekend as Logan and I had already planned to be out of town.
On getting back, my dad had borrowed a trolley from his brother, gotten the flat tire replaced and we were ready to get the car loaded. Now if you have never had to push an 80′s model car, it should be noted that this was an era when they still built a very solid car. Pushing it onto the trolley was not a lot of fun, nor was unloading it and pushing it at the mechanic’s place.
Now you may wonder what this story has to do with wealth. To me wealth goes beyond material possessions. It is the value that we bring to our friends and family. It is the love we have for those we live and experience life with. I know many families where this type of activity would have been impossible.
I feel blessed to have strong relationships with my family and my friends. Knowing that when times are bad, they will be there for me and I can be there for them. Do you have strong relationships with those in your life? I would suggest you spend some time this week rebuilding bridges if you need too, making a call to say hi, sending a card for no reason, and just enjoying the family and friends you have.
