How the Law of Action can lead to Success

by Scott on August 14, 2009

As I have mentioned before, I attended the Continuity Summit by Ryan Lee in Stamford CT earlier this year.  One of the things Ryan was doing to get the word out about the event was a Twitter contest.   The prize was a mini netbook.

To be entered in the contest you just had to tweet with a specific hashtag  (A hashtag is where they use #continuitysummit in the tweet itself.)  It allows people to do specific searches and narrows down the information that is on Twitter.  If you aren’t already following me on Twitter check out @scottlovingood

Now before the Summit, I had opened a Twitter account (takes about 5 minutes) but had not used it very much at all.  So to say it was a new technology is an understatement.  Now it would have been very easy to hear about the contest and simply ignore it.  I am sure many of the people there who had not used Twitter before didn’t go sign up and use it.  It is easy to NOT do something.   It takes effort to do it.

Now to be honest I had not thought that I might win.  My “luck” in these types of contests has been pretty poor.  I won something when I was in high school at my dad’s company picnic once but to be honest I think nearly everyone won something so I don’t know if that counts or not.

Why did I Tweet?  Well one of the decisions I made going to the Summit was to Take Action. That also seemed to be a theme for many of the speakers as well.  They all presented great business models, some going as far as to give you the entire business model they use.  They central theme was Take Action.

The typical response to these types of meetings is to go, sit and listen, take lots of notes, come home and do nothing.  For me, taking action in the Tweet contest was a way to start the ball rolling.  To put the Law of Inertia on my side instead of working against  me.

The Law of Inertia is a real law of physics.  Only half of it is normally used though.  An object at rest tends to stay at rest.  The second part of it though states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion.  Once you get moving, the law works in your favor.  Have you ever had to push a car anywhere?  It takes a tremendous amount of effort to get it started.  Once you get started it generally moves fairly quickly.  This is the same effect.

If you want to be successful in business, you have to get it started.  You have to keep moving.  Once you get past the beginning, it all becomes easier.

PS  Have you taken action yet?  Today’s challenge is to pull out a pen and paper and right down what you want your business too look like this time next year.  If you don’t have one yet, pretend you do.  This is your first step to getting it.   TAKE ACTION NOW
PSS In case youUnboxed HP Mini netbook are wondering, three of us won the netbook.  Here is mine unpackaged in my floor.  It won’t replace my big laptop any time soon, but it will be going with me to the airport when I travel!!  Super light and easy to use!!  I use it with www.Logmein.com to access my other computers while traveling.  You still get your old computing power just on a smaller screen and a much lighter package.
