Remember the movie The Secret It came out in 2006 and focused on the Law of Attraction and how simply thinking about the things you wanted would help you get them. Dan Clark in his keynote speech in 2009 for Liberty Tax mentioned that the Law of Attraction didn’t explain everything. If all we had to do was think about what we wanted to become and it would happen, then every teenage boy would be a teenage girl.
Does the Law of Attraction have some fundamental basis? It does in the sense that what we focus on we tend to act upon. When you first buy a new car, you suddenly start seeing them everywhere. This doesn’t mean that many more of these cars are on the road but rather you are suddenly more aware of them at a conscious level. The same thing applies to the Law of Attraction. When we have a clear vision in our minds of what we want our life to become, it is easier for us to spot opportunities. Seneca, a Roman philosopher from the first century, said “Luck is where opportunity meets preparation”. We all know someone who has been very successful in life. They seem to have everything going for them. It would be easy for us to say they had simply been lucky but is that all it was?
The Law of Attraction will cause you to be more aware of the opportunities that exist. They are everywhere around us if we simply look and focus on them. We see people who start a business and become successful. We see people who meet the girl or guy of their dreams…. who find great deals on a vacation… or any number of things. We may want to say well they were just lucky. Anyone who has started a business, or met the girl of their dreams or gotten a great deal knows that far more than luck is involved. It takes action. The Law of Attraction makes it more likely that we will recognize an opportunity when it comes along. Recognizing it does not create success though. Having natural talent or intelligence doesn’t guarantee it either. Success only comes when Attraction is followed by Action.
It may not work that way in the dictionary. We have to combine Attraction and Action to be successful. In following Seneca’s quote, preparation falls under the Law of Action. To be prepared for an event we have had to spend time, effort and energy laying the groundwork. When a contractor shows up to build a new home on a site, the first thing they have to do is prepare the site. Making sure they have a good flow of the land and a firm foundation will prevent problems in the future. It takes effort just to get to the starting line.
I have two recent examples in my life of where these two Laws collided. I recently attended the Continuity Summit that Ryan Lee put on. During the event, Ryan had a contest to see who could tweet the most using the hashtag #continuitysummit. I had only been on Twitter for a short time but thought this would be a good way for me to take some action while attending the conference. The end result? I got familiar with Twitter.. and won a Dell Netbook. About 400 people attended the conference, only three won a netbook. The Law of Attraction was in place since I had travelled to CT to attend the conference. I was thinking about the concepts involved and looking to find opportunities as were the other 400 plus people attending. Attraction by itself is insufficient for success. Without taking the action of sending out dozens of tweets, I would not have won the netbook. If you are on Twitter – follow me
The second example is actually a post on this blog. Mark Joyner along with Construct Zero has launched a business coaching program. Mark set a challenge out for people to write a blog post about it, Digg it, and post a link to the Digg on his blog. He included specific instructions on how to do it with a diagram of a Scalable Marketing Process. Total time to write the blog post, create a Digg account, and post on his blog was about 20 minutes. The results? I won a years free access to to his business coaching program.
Nearly $5,000 of benefit for only 20 minutes of work. That works out to $15,000 per hour. How often do you make that? Again the opportunity was there for everyone yet fewer than 60 people took action on the contest. It made the odds of winning much easier. I will be detailing a lot of what I implement from this coaching program here and in a couple of other places.
In life only a small percentage of people are looking for opportunities (Law of Attraction) and even fewer will spend the effort on the action (Law of Action).
Do you have a defined vision for your life? If you don’t you may be missing many opportunities. Do you have defined action steps to achieve that vision? Take some time today and write out your life vision. Where you want to be in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years. I recently heard someone say that the summary of his life vision was “To live in a really cool place, working on really cool projects with really cool people, making lots of really cool money and spending time with his really cool family”. Now he had about 20 pages behind that summary to flesh out what each of those things really meant. The benefit writing this out gives you – You put the Law of Attraction into motion by focusing on what you want your life to become. You also make the Law of Action easier because each decision you make can be compared to your vision. If it is helping you to achieve your vision, then do it. Act upon it. Create excitement and push forward. If it does NOT line up with your vision, then skip it and go on with life. It makes decision making much easier.
Go create your life vision and put the laws of Attraction and Action to work in your life.
