What are you waiting on to build your wealth?

by Scott on June 1, 2009

Mike Litman of Conversations with Millionaires recently stated at his presentation for Continuity Summit in Stamford CT that the first 15 yards are the most difficult.

Now stop and think about that for a moment.  Newton’s First law of Motion states that a motion at rest tends to stay at rest.  Breaking our inertia is the hardest part.  Taking the first step.  Actually making the decision is the toughest part.  Once I make a decision I can start to make progress.   Now before we get too far into this I want to ask you a simple question.  Do you prefer perfection or progress?    Think about it before you answer.  Most perfectionists will delay launching because the product, plan or idea isn’t perfect.  It still needs improving.  Someone looking for progress are simply willing to get started and improve on it every day.  Now many people may think that progress won’t make a great difference.  That if they don’t start far enough down the path to perfection they will never get it right.   Well I have a simple math question for you.  Math is something that we all can see and understand.

Your choices today is to accept $1 Million dollars today or to accept $0.01 today.  Easy decision huh?  Take the million.  Now what if I changed the game.  What if the penny doubled every day?  Would you take the million dollars now?  Now before you change your answer watch what happens if we run the numbers.

Day 1  $0.01

Day 2 $0.02

Day 3 $0.04

Day 4 $0.08

Day 5 $0.16

Day 7 $0.32   Million bucks still looks pretty good huh?  No point in making progress..  just keep reading though.

Day 8 $0.64

Day 9 $1.28

Day 10 $2.56

Day 11 $5.12

Day 12 $10.24

Day 13 $20.48

Day 14 $40.96  Wow.  2 weeks into it and still not making a dent in that million bucks huh.  Sitting pretty and feeling good about it huh?

Day 15 $81.92

Day 16 $163.84

Day 17 $327.68

Day 18 $655.36

Day 19 $1,310.72

Day 20 $2,621.44

Day 21 $5,242.88  Hmmm  3 weeks into our challenge we have made some ground up.  Into 5 digits now but so far away from the million huh?

Day 22 $10,485.76

Day 23 $20,971.52

Day 24 $41,943.04

Day 25 $83,886.08

Day 26 $167,772.16

Day 28 $335,544.32  Ready to give up yet?  We have worked to hard making progress but still don’t have it all yet.   Want to call it quits?  Seth Godin calls this the dip.  The time when you want to give up but great success is just a little bit away.  This is when “overnight” successes are made.  You started the journey – time to finish it.

Day 29 $671,088.64

Day 30 $1,342,177.28  Now we are talking.  Broke a million..  but don’t forget that you were making progress and building wealth every day while the million was stagnant.

Day 31 $2,684,354.56   Can you see the power of progress now?  Started at a simple penny.  Something you might not even take time to stop and pick up from the street.  But building on it, working on it, enduring the long slow times can lead to some pretty fantastic rewards.   The overnight success who toils silently for a decade.

You can consider your life the same way.  Every thing you have done up until this moment has led you to this day.  You have your foundation.  Now what are you waiting on to build your wealth?  To make your life what you want it to be.

Newton’s Law also says an object in motion tends to stay in motion.  Get moving and stay that way.
