Tradition or Innovation? Stand out from the crowd

by Scott on July 6, 2009

Many things we do in life are based on traditions.  Some of those traditions have a very sound basis in science but many have simply always been that way.  You may have heard of the mom who always cut off 2 inches from her pot roast before cooking it.  When asked by her husband, she informed him that was the way her mom had done it and taught her.  She called her mom and asked her about it.  Mom says that her mom taught her to do it that way.  Well when they visit Grandma in the nursing home, they ask why she always cut off 2 inches of her pot roast.  Grandma leans back and smiles fondly remembering the many family dinners together.  She then leans back towards her daughter and granddaughter and whispers “Cause if I didn’t it wouldn’t fit in my oven”.   Does your business have traditions in it that aren’t based on sound facts?  Does your plan for wealth contain more tradition than fact?

Fireworks are held at night.  This is a long standing tradition but also based very strongly in fact.  During the daylight, the fireworks would lose a tremendous amount of the beauty they display at night.  Fourth of July evenings are filled with pyrotechnics because of this very reason as well.  Now July 4th is also commonly known for the parades held to celebrate the birth of our nation.  When you think of parades you think of afternoon or early evening.  Gatlinburg TN does something a little differently.  They hold their July 4th parade at 12:01 midnight to make it the first Fourth of July parade in the nation.  A parade at midnight?  Not your traditional approach is it?  So how well does it do?  Well for starters people start lining up their chairs at 8 am in the morning before the parade to reserve their spot.

I have been going to the parade for over a decade.  Every year the crowd gets larger.  Every year the parade draws a huge number of people.  People set out chairs on the parade route 20 hours or more before it ever begins.  Do you customers line up for you?  Do they talk about how different your product is?  Does it have something unique about it?  The parade ends around 2:30 in the morning with over 100,000 people still lining the sidewalks.

Held in the afternoon, I have no idea how many people would show up for it.  Cities across America have Fourth of July parades but as far as I know only Gatlinburg has a Fourth of July Parade at midnight.

Can you break tradition in your business to make a name for yourself?  Can you do something different to standout?  Remember not all traditions or customs are equal.  Breaking tradition can make you the go to business in your market.

  • I think it's always important to remember to be unique in business. Carve your niche and own it...but don't get so stuck in what your doing that you can't intertwine your personality and tastes into the business. By having your own style you will not blend in with the rest.
  • I know a lot of business owners whose personality is why the business is unique. Frank Kern definitely brings it to Mass Control. Mark Joyner does an excellent job bringing his personality into Simpleology.com as well

When we our business personality and our own personality are more tightly integrated, it is easier for our passion to be seen and understood.
